Indian Street Food-Batata bara

Batata vada is a popular vegetarian fast food dish from the Indian state of Maharashtra. The dish consists of a mashed potato patty coated with chick pea flour, which is then deep-fried and served hot with chutney. The vada is typically around two or three inch in diameter
.Batata vada is a fried snack of batter-coated potato stuffed fritter dumplings. Making these take some time but absolutely worth it. I share this lip smacking delicious recipe of Maharashtrian style batata vada with step by step photos. I am sure you will love Indian street food snack.



Ingredients for Batata Vada 

To make batter: 
  • Gram flour - Gram flour - 100 grams ( 1 cup) 
  • Salt - as per taste (1/4 tsp) 
  • Red chili - 1/4 tsp 
  • Carom seeds - 1/4 tsp 
  • Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
Spices for making potato balls: 
  • Potatoes – 300 grams (4 medium size) 
  • Coriander powder - half a teaspoon 
  • Dry mango powder – 1/4 tsp (if you want) 
  • Green chili - 1-2 (finely chopped) 
  • Green coriander _ 2 tbsp finely 
  • chopped Ginger - 1 inch long piece (finely chopped) 
  • Salt - as per taste (1/4 tsp)
  • Refined oil ——— for frying 
  • Red chili powder - less than 1/4 tsp

How to make Batata Vada

  • Boil the potatoes and prepare them. 
  • Make a thick, smooth batter by mixing gram flour with water, 
  • it takes about 3/4 cup of water to dissolve the gram flour, 
  • add salt, red chili powder, carom seeds and coriander powder to the gram flour batter and mix well for 2-3 minutes 
  •  Keep the prepared solution for 15 minutes, so that the gram flour swells well and gets ready.
  • Peel the potatoes, break them finely by hand, 
  • add coriander powder, red chili, dry mango powder, salt, green chili, ginger and green coriander and mix well. 
  • Divide the mixture into 10 equal parts and make round balls out of them.
  • For frying, put a pan on the gas and add oil and heat it. 
  • Take out the potato ball, dip it in gram flour and wrap it
  •  and put it in hot oil. 
  • Fry on low flame. 
  • 3 or 4 vadas can be fried easily at a time. 
  • Fry the Batata Vada till it turns golden brown from all the sides, 
  • put a tissue paper on a plate and take out the Batata Vada from the pan and keep it in it.
  • Serve and eat hot Batata Vada with fried chillies, green coriander chutney and sweet tamarind chutney
